Benefits of the GEP
The GEP has many advantages, including social, economical and practical aspects
Resolve the Island of Barbados' municipal waste management issues
Provide required baseload electricity generation capacity replacing existing obsolete heavy fuel oil generation. This will also reduce the requirement for heavy fuel oils imports and the foreign exchange required,
Provide local employment both during construction and operation phases
A key component of the GEP is to cap the exisitng landfill and use the otherwise useless land for PV Solar. This will encourage significant property development in the vicinity due to the reduction in odours arising from the present landfill.
Enable local ownership of key power generation. The GEP will be owned by both local and foreign investors with a preference for local investors.
The PV Solar on the landfill will utilise land that would otehrwise be useless
Provide an additional potential income from farming. The GEP has committed via agreement with the FTC that within 8 years 80% of the biomass will be indigenously produced, which will require the use of approximately 8,000 acres of Barbados farmland to produce king cane grass as an energy crop partially replacing the reducing demand for sugar cane farming.
Assist with Barbados 2030 climate goals and position Barbados as a leader in climate change and waste management
Allow the continuation of the practice whereby tipping fees are not changed for munication waste disposal.
Significantly minimize the size and impact of future landfills, which will make making them much less odorous
