The GEP will eliminate odours and health problems associated with landfill operations, fires, and processing of solid waste.

 

Overall air pollution is dramatically reduced as the landfill generates large quantities of methane and other powerful greenhouse gases and air pollutants. By comparison, the mostly carbon dioxide generated by the biomass, WtE plant reduces this impact.

 

Land utilization is reduced as reduced additional landfills and associated economic zones of exclusion will be needed in Barbados. More importantly the land downwind of the existing landfill and open solid waste operations will be free of noxious odours and smoke. Thereby greatly improving air quality for citizens and visitors alike.

 

Ground water pollution which cannot be fully eliminated due to existing landfill cells, will not increase as a result of additional landfill activities. This is a substantial long-term benefit to those aquifers and people depending on water down stream of the Vaucluse area as the leachate from existing cells reduces over time.
