A specialist study by The Beck Group concluded that Green Energy Park can develop a reliable and scalable biomass supply through a phased combination of local and imported fuels.

Existing Barbadian resources, including urban and landfill wood waste, could meet a meaningful share of demand, while locally grown king grass provides the clearest opportunity to supply the project’s longer-term fuel requirements. Imported biomass may serve as a transitional fuel while local production is established.

This approach aligns with the Fair Trading Commission’s requirement that at least 80% of the project’s biomass fuel be sourced locally within eight years. The study recommends early field trials, engagement with farmers and landowners, and investment in harvesting, transport and storage infrastructure. Subject to successful implementation, the strategy can strengthen Barbados’ energy security, reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels, divert waste from landfill and create new opportunities in agriculture, logistics and rural employment.
